Winter Pike

2004 will see Peter leading our first organized Pike trip, once again the venue has been chosen with great care, the water is a natural water which has produced pike over 20 kilos. UK pike tactics have not been used on this water before and we are expecting some great fishing and who knows maybe a few pleasant surprises.

For this venue we have a wonderful Rural House with three double bedrooms, bathroom, living room and basic kitchen.  The idea of Rural Houses in Spain is to preserve the  older styles of local architecture, once  ruined buildings are  restored using authentic materials and generally used for tourism. The house is in a charming  village which boasts a  couple of hotels and various bars and  restaurants, the pace of life is unhurried it is a truly Beautiful spot. The house is situated just a few  metres from the  waters edge..

The venue is a combination of a number of natural waters  and a lake of about 8km in length. They are feed by underwater springs,  the water is normally crystal clear being able to see the bottom in depths of 8 metres. Having been in existence for thousands of years the water is very deep, up to 21 metres, the margins are also very steep indeed. The bottom is covered in a thick onion type weed and the margins are surrounded by reeds.

Our target fish in the winter is pike which were introduced in the 50’s and have adapted very well indeed, some 5 years ago the forestry commission introduced a type of rudd to these waters and they became most prolific, I have seen huge clouds of these fish beneath my boat on many occasions.

The pike as you can imagine have had a field day and have  grown to some very impressive sizes, the largest that I have confirmed information from the local Guardia Civil went over 20 kilos. The Guardia Civil use the venue for diving practise and have informed me that they have seen other very large fish. The Spanish anglers who fish this venue normally use lures and spinners so this gives a chance to use tactics  the  fish have never seen before. Apart from the pike large carp to over 30lb are  also in these waters, I spent a  number of years fishing at this venue, not  for the pike but for the 3  different types of barbel.  I was  lucky enough to fish at night which is when they normally feed, (which is no longer allowed) and we caught a great number of Comizo barbel to over 30lb, Cabecicorto ( smallhead ) barbel to over 21lb and Guiraonis Barbel ( mediterranean ) to over 17lb. The barbel  have always inhabited these waters and can be very hard to catch during the day.  We have caught them  on a number of different baits from boilies to dead baits. We did very well in the winter so who knows if any of our pike baits will end up being eaten by these monsters as they are very predatory fish .
