Guadalest
The village of Guadalest occupies one of the most dramatic positions in Spain, and is only 80 km (50 miles) away. This small village is perched like an eagles nest on the peak of a granite mountain, and has magnificent views across the valley.
Getting halfway to Guadalest via Cocentaina, Benilloba, and Benasau is quite a tranquil journey, however, from Benasau to Confrides is a great driving experience, the twisting road climbs ever upwards, with sharp bends and steep drops on the passenger side, but the views make it all worthwhile.
On reaching Guadalest you can see why the Moors, who constructed castles to defend the area, considered this place a site of strategic importance.
The impressive entrance to the fort and village of Guadalest is via a 15 metre long tunnel which has been carved through the solid rock, and when you reach the other end and see the ancient houses, you seem to have travelled back in time.
There are numerous interesting museums (all of which have entrance charges) to visit so you can learn more about its history, as well as seeing the castle ruins.
Today Guadalest is a major tourist attraction having been declared a 'Monument of Historical and Artistic Value' in 1974. It charms over 2 million visitors every year and is a truly spectacular sight.
Take your camera as photo opportunities are everywhere, the building you will see on most of the postcards is the whitewashed bell tower of Penon de la Alcala which seems to cling to the mountain face.
