COMIZO BARBEL

Over the last 2 years Peter has been exploring the huge Guadiana river system, this great river  holds many different species, Carp, Pike, Bass, and three different types of barbel.  The Cabecicorto (Small head), Guiraonis (Mediterranean) and the mighty Comizo which can grow in excess of 30lb and is the main species in the river. These fish can be caught in many ways and we have had  success on the fly, float, touch  ledgering and carp style tactics. There are many Kilometres  of  river to explore and some very special  fish to be caught.

During the spring of 2003 we were lucky enough to be at the river during the spawn, I can honestly say that I have never seen so many barbel before, thousands of fish coming up the river. The river is divided by a number of dams and wiers, this means that the fish are trapped in certain stretches of the river. During the spawn we saw a number of fish in the 12 to 13 kilo range.  The Guadiana is a very large rivers and this type of information helps us in our search for the bigger fish.

The Comizo barbel is a very predatory fish and will take live baits, crayfish and even spinners and lures apart from particle type baits and boilies. Though we have landed Comizo barbel to over 30lb in some still waters we have yet to contact the really big fish in flowing water. If you think you are up to the challenge, why not give it a go.........

The hotel we have chosen for this venue is only a few metres from the river, in fact you can see the fish topping from your room. With the use of a large 5 metre canoe we are able to access areas that offer the very best fishing opportunities. We are still exploring this  river and by no means have we discovered all it’s secrets. Fancy a Go.........
